Varro / Practice Brief / 001

May 2026

Keep Xero for your limited-company clients. Varro handles the self-employed.

Purpose-built MTD ITSA filing for sole traders, CIS subcontractors and landlords. Cumulative quarterly updates, SA103F box-mapping and the Final Declaration in one flow — the bits Xero and QuickBooks bolt on, built first here.

§01·Scope

We picked one narrow job.And did it properly.

Four things we deliberately don’t build, and what we built instead. If your book has any of these on the “not Varro” side, keep the incumbent — they’re good at what they do.

  • Not 01

    Limited-company accounts

If your client is in Companies House, Xero or FreeAgent is still the right tool. We don't pretend otherwise.

  • Not 02

    Payroll, PAYE RTI, multi-currency

No payroll engine. No FX. Both are solved problems — we didn't solve them again.

  • Not 03

    Bookkeeping for trading companies

No P&L, no balance sheet, no VAT return. Nothing that isn't on the ITSA filing path.

  • Not 04

ITSA bolted onto a generic ledger

Cumulative quarterly updates, SA103F box mapping, the Final Declaration — those are the product. Everything else works around them.

§02·Workflow, end to end

Four screens between a shoebox and HMRC.

Each card below is the actual interface a client or a junior will see. No CSV juggling, no bridging software, no separate SA tool at year-end.

§01·Onboard

Client adds their records in minutes

Invite the client and they upload their statements (PDF, CSV or Excel) — Varro parses them, assigns HMRC categories, and starts building the quarterly total on day one. A one-tap Open Banking bank feed is coming soon.

§02·CIS

Upload a CIS statement, we do the rest

Monthly contractor statement goes in as a PDF. Varro extracts gross, materials and tax deducted, assigns each line to SA103F Box 81, and keeps a running refund total across the year. The only MTD tool that does this.

Firm-branded Tax Summary PDF

The document a client signs before Final Declaration carries your firm's name and logo from day one. Summary figures, working papers, calculation trail — everything you'd want a junior to produce by hand, generated automatically.

§03·Side by side

What Varro does that the others don’t.

Compiled from public documentation and partner plan sheets (April 2026). Where a competitor genuinely does the thing, it’s a tick. Corrections welcome: sales@varro-tax.co.uk.

§04·Economics

Hours back, per partner, per year.

Three firm archetypes we speak to. Numbers are illustrative — grounded in the arithmetic below each, caveats written in plain English. If your book doesn’t match one of these, we’ll do the sums live on the call.

Construction

Four-partner firm · 30 CIS subs

Thirty subcontractors averaging twelve monthly statements each.

Main win

CIS auto-extraction replaces January statement-typing.

  • ≈ 360 statements / year
  • ≈ 4 min / statement typed manually → 0 min in Varro
24 h/ partner / year

Assumes twelve monthly statements per sub and manual data entry today. Your mix may differ.

Diaspora

Sole practitioner · 40 EU-community clients

Forty sole traders, about half non-native English speakers.

Main win

Tutorials in EN / PL / RO / LT remove translation overhead at quarters.

  • ≈ 20 clients / year asking the same filing question
  • ≈ 30 min / client walking them through it
10 h/ year

Assumes current support pattern: one filing-walkthrough call per mixed-language client per year.

Mixed

Two-partner firm · 80 self-employed clients

Blend of sole traders and landlords under MTD threshold.

Main win

One quarterly flow instead of juggling Xero ITSA plus a separate SA tool in January.

  • ≈ 320 cumulative updates / year
  • ≈ 20 min / update → ≈ 5 min in Varro
80 h/ firm / year

Based on cumulative-update prep time in tools that require CSV re-mapping between ITSA and SA software.

§05·Founding Practice programme

Five London firms. Bespoke terms. Named on the call.

We’re signing a small first cohort ahead of the 5 August 2026 filing window. The deal is shaped to the firm — book size, client mix, language split. We publish no figures because every one is different.

Serious practices only — no agency pitches.

  • Term 01

Founding rates, negotiated to your book

Sized against your client mix on the call. Never republished. Specific term length agreed in the contract — we don't advertise it.

  • Term 02

    Named technical contact, year one

Not a ticketing queue. Direct line to the team building the product.

  • Term 03

One feature of your choice, shipped in 90 days

Pick something missing that would remove friction for your practice. If it fits the ITSA scope, it ships.

  • Term 04

Your logo on the Launch Partners strip

When we go public in late 2026, the practices that took the bet are named. Opt out if you'd rather stay quiet.
